Everest Short Family Adventure Trek

Overview

What is the number one place everyone wants to visit in Nepal? It’s Mt. Everest. Rising 8,848 meters, it is the highest mountain in the world. The mountain itself is surrounded by several other 8,000 meter high peaks, forming a ring of supporting mountains that seem to bow and honor the giant Everest.

Nepal is becoming a popular place to do rafting. The white water rafting in this country is second to none.  The fast flowing mountain rivers create some wonderful rafting opportunities that are fun and exciting.

The Everest Short Adventure Trek combines a short trek in the Everest region along with a two day rafting trip on the Trishuli River outside of Kathmandu. It is an ultimate adventure for anyone as they come to enjoy all Nepal has to offer.

The trek is a good beginner’s trek, which does not compromise scenery as you gaze up at the highest mountain in the world. The white water rafting will give you some challenges as you tackle Class II and Class III rapids which are ideal for any novice.

This trip will give you the ultimate taste of Nepal. From the high mountain vistas to rapidly flowing rivers, it is all here. Be sure to discuss this adventure with your representative at VerticalExpedition. It is the ultimate experience designed for the entire family. The adventure of a lifetime starts with an e-mail or phone call to Vertical Expedition.

Itinerary

You arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport where a representative of Vertical Expedition will greet you and take you to your Three Star Hotel by private car. You will enjoy a welcome drink as well as an evening orientation about your trip as well as equipment check.  Spend the night in the hotel.

There is plenty to see and do in the Kathmandu Valley, and with our private vehicle and your own personal guide, you will spend the day seeing the highlights of the Valley. There are seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, plus a chance to see experience local culture and taste local foods.

After breakfast, we will take a domestic flight to Lukla where we begin our trek in the Everest region. It is just a 45 minute flight, and what a flight it is! We literally follow the backbone of the Himalayas eastward. On the flight you will see not only Mt. Everest, but also the peaks of Kanchenjunga III, Mt. Lhotse IV, and Makalu V. Each of these peaks is over 8,000 meters, literally forming the roof of the world. We land in Lukla village where we begin our trek. There are no roads to Lukla, so this village is only accessible by air or a seven day trek from Jiri village. We will be heading toward Phakding village. We actually go downhill from Lukla as we travel through the rugged foothills of the Everest region. Trekking time is around three hours and we will stay in a local lodge at Phakding.

Our walk begins early in the morning. It is a fairly easy trek, even starting out rather level as we follow the Dudh Koshi River. The land will start to move uphill gradually as we make our way toward the main district city of Namche Bazaar. We will cross the Hillary suspension bridge, and until we finally come to the steepest part of today’s trek that leads us to Namche Bazar. There are plenty of views of the high mountains along the way, as well as becoming immersed in the local Buddhist culture of the Sherpa people. We will check into a local guesthouse for the night.

It is important to spend a day acclimatizing to the higher elevation as altitude sickness can be quite serious. The day will not be spent just lying around, but we will hike to Everest Viewpoint for a magnificent view of Mt. Everest. From here, you will see the spectacular peaks of Everest, Amadablam, Nuptse and many more. It is only a two hour hike to Everest Viewpoint and we will spend a few hours there enjoying the view as well as having lunch. We will return to Namche Bazaar where you can spend the afternoon exploring the village. There is a lot to see here. We will spend the night in our local guest house.

Today’s trek will lead us to the famed monastery of Tengboche. It is the highest monastery in the world at 3,860 meters. This monastery features the footprint of the Buddhist lama St. Milarepa. This monastery is famed for its incredible views of Mt. Everest and the 8,000+m peaks in the area. It is a pleasant trek to this place, taking around seven hours. There is some steep climbing just before reaching Tengboche, but otherwise the trail is relatively level. We will spend the night at a mountain lodge.

We start the return trip, trekking downhill to the district capital of Namche Bazaar. Trekking time is around 6 – 7 hours. The trail zig-zags downhill, then we find stone steps for an easier time in walking.  We cross the Dudh Koshi River  and then climb back upwards to reach the village of Kyangjuma. From there, it is relatively level to Namche Bazaar.

This is the final day of trekking as we make our way back to Lukwa so we can catch the flight back to Kathmandu in the morning. We follow the Dudh Koshi River, crossing it at the village of Jorsalle. From here is a short climb to the village of Monjo where we exit the Sagarmatha National Park. We will follow the Dudh Koshi River downstream, taking lunch at Phakding and then on to Lukwa where we will spend the night in a local mountain lodge.

We catch an early morning flight back to the capital, checking back into our Three Star Hotel in the city. The rest of the day is on your own to relax, do some shopping in Thamel or do further exploration of the Valley.

We travel in the morning 85 km to our starting point of Charaudi. We spend the day rafting down the Trisuli River, who’s waters come from the Tibetan Plateau. There are plenty of rapids to shoot on your raft, all the while under the care of an experienced river guide. We take on a few rapids, then stop along the river for lunch. After lunch, shoot some more rapids with dinner being at our camping site.

We wake up early and start rafting after breakfast. There are plenty more rapids as the Trisuli River boils its way toward the Terai region where it will become a slow-paced river. We will not encounter its slow phase as here it is a wild river giving plenty of excitement. We pass over rapids locally known as bijili rapids and tea pot. We stop for lunch on the river, then wrap up our experience and return to Kathmandu. There is a final departure dinner in the evening where we will enjoy local dancing and food.

All good things must come to an end, and your trip to Nepal is no exception. Before leaving, why not talk to your representative at Vertical Expedition about returning to Nepal for your next holiday. The vast majority of people make a return trip to Nepal because they are impressed by not only the beauty, but also the local people.  Vertical Expedition offers trips into neighboring Tibet, Bhutan and India.
